Friends of the Greenhouse Birth Center Friends of the Greenhouse Birth Center is a group of volunteers that create fundraising opportunities and participate in other work to raise awareness of natural birthing as a real option in the Lansing area. One of the best perks to giving birth at the Greenhouse Birth Center is becoming a part of the community that has emerged around the birth center. All of our gatherings are facilitated by volunteer mothers (with the exception of the Mom & Baby: Newborn to pre-crawler group) who have been involved with the birth center in some way, whether giving birth there or attending childbirth classes, or attending our support groups. Some of the recent events the Friends of GBC have held are listed below as well as upcoming events as their dates approach. If you are interested in joining this effort, please e-mail your contact information to info@greenhousebirthcenter.com.

2008 Events
Michigan Parade: May 2008 In past years, the GBC has had a float in the Michigan Parade that takes place in May. Unfortunately, we have received news that due to Michigan's economic status, the parade will not be held this year. We may be entering another area parade this year in lieu of this event. Please check back here for updates on our Annual Mom & Baby Sale (June) and our GBC Reunion (August).
Purse Party Fundraiser: Spring 2008 Considering for a new style this spring? Look no further. New styles, colors and accessories will be available for cash and carry at the Greenhouse Birth Center on Saturday, April 12th from 10am-1pm. If it's been a long time since you treated yourself, or if you have loved ones to shop for, come take a look at what is available and help support the GBC at the same time. For more information, please contact
Jenn Somerville at 712-2631.
Designer Replica Purses
Feb-March 2008: 4th Annual GBC Shirt Sale Every year, there is an opportunity to show your support of the GBC by purchasing & wearing a shirt in the wider Mid-Michigan community. Back by popular demand are last year's designs, including an "I sprouted..." design and the Breastfeeding Icon (below, center) in addition to the original GBC design. Please use this order form to order. If you have any questions, please contact Jaime at 853-0728 or williamsjai@yahoo.com. Orders are due by March 10, 2008 in order to receive the shirts in April.
Left: A toddler size shirt with GBC logo design in grey. Also, the "I sprouted" design is only available in grey with forest green lettering, but white is shown to display the design. (We learned the hard way in 2004 that white and toddlers don't mix very well.) Right: Adult size Large and Children's size XS in the forest green GBC logo tees. Logo is on front left side of chest and full on the back with the website added on the back.
ChicoBag Reuseable Grocery Bag Fundraiser
The Friends of the Greenhouse Birth Center (GBC) volunteer group is coordinating a reusable grocery bag fundraiser. All profits will go to the GBC. This is an excellent way to support the GBC and save the planet!
Features:
Facts about plastic bags and the environment: The average American uses between 300 and 700 plastic bags per year. Ø If everyone in the United States tied their annual consumption of plastic bags together in a giant chain, the chain would reach around the Earth not once, but 760 times! Ø According to the American Forest and Paper Association, in 1999 the U.S. alone used 10 billion paper grocery bags, requiring 14 million trees to be cut down. Plastic bags don’t biodegrade, they photo-degrade—breaking down into small toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food-chain when mistaken for zooplankton or jellyfish.
Please use this order form to order. If you have any questions, please contact Andrea at 517-256-5650 or andrea_weinrick@yahoo.com. Orders are due by March 10, 2008 in order to receive the bags in April.
The Business of Being Born Special Community Screening Join the Greater Lansing Area in February 2008 to watch a documentary film about the maternity care in the U.S. and get informed. This film examines and questions the way American women birth their babies. The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and interesting statistics about the current maternity care system. When director Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal. This event will be open to the community, so if you have ever been pregnant or hope to be pregnant one day, please check back and more details will be posted as the date nears. For more information about the film, please see The Business of Being Born website.
*As most recently seen in Newsweek.
Saturday, February 23rd Sunday, February 24th 7:00 pm 3:00 pm with special guest, Jennifer Block*
Each screening will be followed by a talkback panel.
